Tiistikset 3.

Third annual gentleman regatta

32NM, good weather, 2-4ms

We have had pretty nice ski trips with our ski club about ten years in a row and three years ago we decided to add annual sailing trip to our calendars.

This year we decided to start Friday after work and head out to close by island called Gåsgrundet for first night and carry on the sailing with rest of the gang on Saturday.

Xtempores crew consisted from Me and Petteri. M/Y Jorma (Buster xxl), skippered by Kennu, joined us little later and rest of the saturdays gang, Ilkka, Ville K and Jouni came with M/Y Irma (Targa 30).

We enjoyed multiple beers, good food, campfire, music and beautiful evening.

Next morning I encountered pretty beastly hangover and didn’t have powers to go sailing until afternoon.

Last boat of the squadron S/Y Rkelly, containing Antti, Tappi and Kaitsu, had already passed us and they were on their way to the next nights harbor in Stora Svartö. That gave me some extra powers to get up and going.

After a while we were already putting the sails up out in the sea. Somehow I managed to make my gennaker look like a big banana when we hoisted it and all the ropes were pretty tangled in front of the boat. After some huffing and puffing that started to work and look like a sail again.

It was a really nice day and we were sailing among a bunch of other sailing enthusiasts.

At the evening we had some fun photographing random weirdness stuff in the island. Also food, music, Partying, beer and other funny stuff was involved. Ilkka had his birthday so we sang for him.

Morning came and it was time to head back to home.

It was really nice weekend with really good friends and I can’t wait for the next trip with these guys.

Tiistikset 2.

6-9 ms SW, 15c, 18NM.

Osallituttiin kauden toisiin kisoihin kerrankin kunnon miehistöllä.

Aurinkoinen viikonloppu

20c, 3ms, 19NM.

Kesäinen viikonloppu saapui. Mentiin suoraan töistä Suomenlinnaan yöksi. Oli lämmintä. Satamassa oli ruuhkaa mutta päästiin inferno 29n viereeen.

Seuraavana päivänä ajeltiin Suomenlinnasta Kotiluodolle, pohjoispäähän ankkuri/keula kallioon parkilla. Oli upea paikka!

First race

15c, clear, SW 0-3ms, 17nm

I took part for the first sail race as skipper. Race is weekly sailrace arranged by Koivusaaren pursiseura. It’s called Tiistis. It didn’t go well.

I was sailing solo the weather was really good but I was already late when I took of from MSVK. Didn’t have enough time to change racing genoa on.

There was 14 boats in the race. 7 of those were in the same start with me. At the start there was about 3ms wind. Start didn’t go well I was too far in the left and I had to tack right away. Somehow I managet to go from 7 to third before the first marker. All was good for a moment. Then the wind stopped.

I had a big problems putting the gennaker ready and steer at the same time. I have an autopilot but the wind was changing all the time and the autopilot seemed really stressed about it. Ok, then I realized that the gennaker was completely useless in the downwind/ calm sea. So I decided to dig the spinnaker out for the first time.

When I was changing the gennaker to spinnaker while the autopilot tried to keep up the speed up in nonexistent wind the rest of the boats passed me.

I was sweaty, last and lost my hope for a victory in my first regatta. Little later I looked the clock and somehow I remembered that the race ends at nine, three hours after start. I checked that I still have a long way to go and I wouldn’t make it in time to the goal. So to cheer up my mood I put the music loud, opened a beer and decided to enjoy the weather for a while.

Just when I was taking the spinnaker down I noticed the goal boat just in front of me. They had changet the goal line because of the calm weather.

So mute the music, spinnaker up and running again and hide the beer. Game was still on.

Couple minutes later I had finished my first regatta by myself. It didn’t go well but it was a really good experience and probably more memorable than just a regular race.

I was second to last, there was one DNF (did not finnish)

Mother’s Day

10c, clear, 1-4ms, 11nm.

It was Mother’s Day so I invited my mom to sailing with me, Jonna and Eliel.

We sailed to tammakari-torpedolahti and ate a lunch at the boat. After the lunch we went hiking around kuninkaansaari. Climbed to the kuninkaansaari hill with Eliel.  Later at the evening we sailed (with sails) all the way to the msvk harbor.

Gåsgrundet

10-15c, clear, 1-5ms, 18nm.

Day trip to gosgrundet. We saw some racing boats on our way.  Grilled food in beautiful weather. Kivi and kids and Ilkka also came to gosgrundet with the motorboat.  Tried the code1 gennaker first time on our way back to msvk.

Evening training

+2c, 5ms SW, 7NM Iltalenkki

Rehearsal sailing with imaginary friends.

Earlier this day we had a major snowfall in Helsinki. Weather changed suddenly and it was a time for little evening sail.

First night of the season

Suomenlinna, 6nm, 15-20c, clear, 3ms SE

Weather turned suddenly good so we went for the first overnight trip this year. We started easy just with Suomenlinna.

It was really warm and beautiful day and night.Eliel played with legos at the pier and we cooked some easy to do pasta.

On Sunday we hiked around Suomenlinna island and enjoyed the sceneries.

I did some new lazy jacks for the boat. On our way back I tried those. Worked well, and I can imagine that the best use of those is in really windy weathers.

On our way back to MSVK.

Jonna watching sunset.

Easy lunch.

Lego stuff at the pier.

Eliel eating bread and enjoying the weather.

Jonna being serious.

Coffee and sun.

 Doing the lazy jacks.
